remarkable conservation accomplishments

The Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery organization has successfully preserved and promoted the extraordinary natural and historical treasure that the Mount Royal Cemetery has become since its establishment in 1852. Their unwavering commitment has safeguarded valuable artifacts and revitalized their historical importance, preserving Mount Royal Cemetery’s legacy for future generations.

Preservation and promotion of Mount Royal Cemetery’s heritage

preserving artifacts and monuments

The Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery are committed to promoting and enriching the Cemetery through various initiatives. One significant aspect of their ongoing projects involves the caring restoration of abandoned monuments. Each summer, a dedicated effort is made to clean and clear old monuments, removing obstructing vegetation and repairing those that have fallen or suffered damage. Additionally, faded inscriptions on granite monuments are meticulously repainted, ensuring they are legible and easily readable. Furthermore, the Friends undertake projects to improve the landscape, adding vibrant colours that contribute to the picturesque scenery of the Cemetery.

Honouring legacies

The Friends have installed numerous informative plaques across Mount Royal Cemetery to remember influential individuals and their contributions to local history. These plaques also recognize specific sections and remarkable achievements of individuals buried in the cemetery. Additionally, the Friends have sponsored historical research projects through grants to university students, enabling the collection of valuable information for historical tours and the creation of texts for commemorative plaques.

Promoting heritage and nature

The Friends offer educational activities to the public, including historical walking tours, tree tours, lectures, birdwatching, art exhibitions, and photo exhibitions. They have also created a collection of informative pamphlets showcasing the burial sites of 100 notable individuals, 100 tree species and 130 bird species found within the grounds, 50 extraordinary memorials, and 50 inspiring quotations from celebrated authors engraved on monuments. These pamphlets are provided free of charge and can be obtained at our premises.
