The Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery was formed in 1998 as a charitable organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and natural beauty of the Mount Royal Cemetery. Through fundraising, free annual activities for the public, and preservation projects, the Friends organization works toward ensuring the Cemetery’s heritage is well protected.
Established in 1852, the Mount Royal Cemetery holds immense natural and historical value, integral to Montréal’s cherished heritage. It provides visitors with a serene sanctuary, offering solace and captivating surroundings. However, certain elements within the cemetery, such as monuments and flora, require attention and care.
One challenge faced by cemetery management is the maintenance of monuments, as it is the responsibility of the families who own the burial rights. However, locating these families, who have owned the monuments for over a century, has become increasingly difficult. Additionally, efforts to enhance the flora and create a better habitat for fauna require attention.
The organization of the Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the cemetery’s natural and historical importance. They contribute to the upkeep of the cemetery by addressing these challenges and working toward their resolution.
Since 2000, the Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery has successfully raised funds for restoration projects and educational activities that align with their preservation and promotion goals.
Their dedicated efforts have collected over $500,000 in donations during the two decades of operation. The support they have received is greatly appreciated as they continue to undertake impactful projects aimed at preserving and promoting the Cemetery’s rich heritage.
A long list of projects is awaiting funding to pursue the preservation of the historical sections of the Mount Royal Cemetery: monument repairs, landscaping projects, educational activities, etc.
The Mount Royal Cemetery was named a NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE in 1998 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. It received this designation for its significant historical importance during the rural cemetery movement of the 1800s. The commemorative plaque at the Cemetery’s main entrance mentions that “this cemetery is an exceptional example of the aesthetics of rural cemeteries that have emerged in the United States in the 19th century. Originally located outside the city, on the northern side of the mountain, it provided a solution to the old overcrowded urban cemeteries.”

The Friends of the Mount Royal Cemetery’s goal is to preserve the Cemetery’s historical legacy and honour the memory of those laid to rest there. They have significantly improved the historical sections through careful financial management and project selection. Still, more work must be done, and many projects need support.
